SUBJECT: EECS Master Works -- a showcase for oral thesis presentations
DATE: September 27, 1995
The EECS Master Works program is a biannual colloquium of oral presentations designed to highlight and to honor our Master's degree candidates. We encourage all students who are completing their Master's degree this term (including M.Eng., VI-A, or S.M. with 24-unit theses) to apply to give a 15-minute oral thesis presentation at this colloquium--scheduled this Fall for the afternoon of November 20. From the applicants we will select about 20 to give presentations, as representatives of our degree candidates. And we invite all Department students and faculty to join with us in listening to the presentations and acknowledging the outstanding work done by Course 6 Master's candidates.
Offering to give a presentation is purely voluntary, and being selected is a considerable honor. The colloquium program will be published in advance and distributed widely. All Master Works presenters are listed in the annual EECS Awards and Honors booklet, and prizes will be given for the best oral presentations. In addition, the Department awards prizes of various kinds for Masters theses which are overall outstanding; making a presentation at the colloquium is ordinarily necessary in order to be considered for such a prize.
This Fall's EECS Master Works colloquium will be held on Monday afternoon, November 20, 3:00-5:15 PM. To apply to give a presentation, please submit a brief (two or three paragraphs) abstract, together with a note of endorsement by your thesis supervisor. If you are a VI-A student, please also tell us the company where your VI-A work was done. Each talk will last 15 minutes, followed by a 5-minute question period. Applications should be given to Janice Balzer in Room 36-825 (or preferably submitted by email, balzer@cbgrle.mit.edu ), and must be received by October 30 in order to be considered. Students selected to give presentations will be notified by November 6. Previous Master Works colloquia have been happy occasions; we look forward to an exciting afternoon on November 20!
